Mona Vale Public Library Facebook

Is up to date, contains readers reviews, book club information, updates for HSC studies and various functions as well as wisdoms like this one, in a link called Readers Nook, where readers exchange opinions about adult fiction

The Reader's Nook's photo.

Exercise 9

I find Facebook the handiest ands easiest to access and the most comprehensive.

All companies have to be social media savvy in order to keep up with their customers. It also saves them time by communicating on Facebook about all their new products and promotions and sales.

Customers can post opinions and various issues they have. Libraries , being the community hubs they now are , need to be on social media to attract new readers and inform old ones. Library customers can offer suggestions and access information about events and happenings at the library.

I believe Facebook continuously update their accessibility and security and privacy policies.

Exercise 8

A "Privacy Economist"? Wow, now that is one of those jobs they were telling us will be created by the time we grew up. Nice to hear an Italian accent, thank you.

Alessandro is telling us the NSA cannot follow some of our Internet actions, Edward Snowden disagrees. Yes, we have lost control of all data we put "out there". Once published online, it belongs to anyone and everyone. Legislators keep running after technology to update the rules, yet technology is always ahead.

How true : we did give up our privacy for comfort and convenience. We were seduced by the technologies magic spell and we no longer can live without it.

Is privacy like trust, you can only lose it once? Sometimes we just do not have a choice in the matter, denying ourselves all the wonders of the Internet?? You cannot not call that living!!

What reviews? Maybe they have been removed or the library no longer offers this option. I wouldn't mind reading them at all, I am always interested to know what others think about a book they have actually read. It actually says a lot about the reviewers.

Found it interesting; they all seem to write anonymously, that's probably another issue about reviews. I generally find them useful.

My local public Library provides book reviews written by the ABR (Australia Books Reviews) only.

Exercise 5

I think it is a terrific idea for libraries to make the most of all social media, in order to:
  • Advertise themselves and services they offer the community
  • Reach the young and old readers who otherwise would not enter a library
  • Raise awareness of community events
  • Invite readers and library clients to access material they have available including ebooks
  • Encourage reading and thirst for information and cultural exchanges
Social media legislation does protect those participating in all exchanges, I do not see anything wrong with being active on Facebook and twitter, as long as that legislation is respected by all parties.

Exercise 2

The John Oxley Library blog

Loved the template and lay out documenting historic facts and events in Queensland.

There are links to Queensland State Library website, Our Services, Resources, What's On and About Us. The colourful link squares on the left margin highlight the various chapters in the Queensland State historical events descriptions. The photographs are particularly telling.

Exercise 1

Exercise 1

Social Media, Web 2.0 and Library 2.0Web 2.0 is the name given to a variety of websites, networks and applications on the internet which allow and encourage user participation.
Web 2.0 is also called Social Media, or Library 2.0.
User participation on Web 2.0 can take many forms, but all retain the basic idea that content is provided by users.

For example, Facebook.

Libraries are increasingly using Social media themselves. This may be to engage clients, or to encourage them to participate or share. This might mean - for example - allowing readers to leave ratings or reviews on the records of books on the library catalogue.
Another way Libraries are using Web 2.0 is to create content. In this way Libraries are becoming publishers, as well as providors of content. This may involve creating an online gallery of local history photos for example. Or creating a blog to inform new users of popular new titles, or current events.
